So we have plastidipped a few motorcycles and here’s what we found:

The biggest pro to plasti-dip is ease of use. You can be a super heavy handed painter and it will still come out pretty good. That being said, if you don’t prep your surface properly, nothing will make that paint job come out nicely. Now to the con: Durability. The paint scratches very easy. Any chemical like gas oil chain clean brake fluid will damage it. We have plastidipped a dual purpose motorcycle and it started peeling after a few road uses and 1 minor offroad trail. Our biggest test of plastidip came from Scott’s 636. Scott puts almost 10,000 miles a year on his bikes so this was definitely more of a long-term test. The bike actually looked really great for almost a year. Just general road riding and commuting doesn’t put too much wear on the paint. However, tank bags and long trips are killers. The magnets and straps from the bags both started wearing down the paint on the gas tank and on the tail fairings fairly quick. Despite the amount of use his bike gets after three years the pictures below depict the imperfections in the paint now which were mainly caused from bags being strapped to the bike. We were really impressed with the overall finish of the plasti-dip and how well it holds up for street riding. We did not spend a fortune either. We used a new product at the time from Dupli-Color from their Custom Wrap product line. It took only four cans of paint to dip this ZX6R and came out just as good as a professional paint job. Dupli-Color is now going nuts with this product line and creating a variety of different colors which was not the case three years ago.
