You just bought your first motorcycle and now you need gear! It’s important to have equipment that provides safety and minimize risks during the ride, and in case of a possible crash. Here is a list of basic gear you’ll need.
- Helmets
Helmets are the most important piece of safety equipment. It’s your head and your brain. Purchase wisely. Any helmet you purchase should be DOT approved and SNELL approval would be good as well. SNELL does it’s own private test on helmets. If you skimp on any part of your gear, do not skimp on the helmet! Most high end helmets have pinlock visors for an antifog insert. This is so helpful on cold mornings when breathing at stop lights completely fogs up your shield. I always recommend full face helmets and modular helmets over half helmets or 3/4 helmets. It’s also nice to be able to connect a Bluetooth up and listen to music or get directions in your helmet.
- Biker Jackets
Keeping the upper body protected with a suitable jacket is essential to avoid abrasions and reduce the impact in case of a crash. The best jackets are waterproof, windproof and have protections on elbows, shoulders, and back to ensure the safety of the torso. In addition, it usually has a removable thermal inner lining that adapts well to any kind of weather throughout the year. Leather is always hotter, but will protect you more than a mesh or textile jacket.
- Pants
Similar to the upper body, the lower body should also be protected at all times. In case of a fall, burns can occur, so it’s necessary to have pants that protect your legs properly while maintaining comfort. You can wear leather or textile or you can purchase Kevlar Jeans which are a little better for everyday riding.
- Gloves
Gloves not only protect your hands, but also ensure a good hand grip to allow you to steer with ease. In cold weather they keep the hands warm and allow transpiration to avoid loss of sensitivity. On the outside, they have a protective shell with padding on the knuckles to cushion the impacts. Some higher end gloves will have palm padding as well which is nice. Great for protection and bar fights!
